I have PCOS and TTC. Always before my old doctor said that I wasn't ovulating but didn't know I had PCOS. She had me on clomid to try and induce ovulation but it didn't work. Later I saw a second dr. who diagnosed me PCOS. When she got my results on my ultra sound she said that she could tell I had recently had shed my endometrial lining and that she could tell I had just had a period. (My first one in 7 months thanks to low carb low sugar diet). I read that progesterone makes you shed that lining and another website says progesterone is there when you ovulate. So does that mean I am for sure going to ovulate this month or that I did last month or does it mean nothing? I'm confused please help?

  1. Progesterone doesn't make you loose your endometrial lining, it's decrease in concentration does.  During one's cycle before the ovum is released estrogen is made by the developing follicle and surges during the eggs release.  After this the corpus luteum, made from the the follicle where the egg released from, is churning out progesterone - if there is no hCG (meaning an embryo has implanted) then the progesterone levels crash and you have your period.  In the case of implantation this corpus luetem keeps churning out progesterone, which gets to high levels in pregnancy, to maintain the endometrium and the pregnancy.  Often in animals the level is checked to pinpoint when the animal will give birth.

Progesterone is there when you ovulate, but at low levels.  It's levels are increasing with estrogen, but the peak occurs after estrogen peaks.  Loosing your lining usually means you ovulated.

  2. Your endrometrium (uterine lining) becomes necrotic in the absence of Progesterone and estradiol, thus a period occurs

Progesterone is present just after ovulation to prepare the body should there be fertilisation of the egg.  If this hasn't occurred, the Progesterone levels dissipate, and menstruation occurs
