  1. HEOP is just a small part of the larger "package" of financial aid that is available to students from "disadvantaged" financial backgrounds.

HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program) itself is actually only partially concerned with financial aid - HEOP is a whole package of services.

HEOP provides testing, counseling, tutoring and academic advisement to students who do not otherwise meet the admissions standards to pursue a college degree - the program is focused on skills improvement, college prep, and tutoring, as well as financial assistance.

To apply for consideration for the HEOP program, a student must also apply for the federal Pell Grant, and for New York State's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA.

Students accepted for the program receive financial aid assistance from some or all of the following: TAP, Pell Grants, subsidized Stafford Loans, institutional grants, Federal Work-Study and HEOP program grants.

There are also financial requirements -these depend on household size - for example, a student meets the financial qualification standard if they come from a 4-person household with a total annual income of $27,800 or less.

Students selected for consideration must interview with the HEOP program and provide copies of last year's tax forms and benefits statements.

All students selected for HEOP program benefits must attend an intensive Pre-Freshman Summer Program, and they must live on campus throughout their undergraduate enrollment, unless they are married or above the traditional student age.

HEOP is designed to cover the entire financial need of students selected for the program. That would include the entire "Cost of Attendance".

The SEEK program is somewhat similar - it's another program that is designed to help both economically disadvantaged and academically unprepared students earn admission to - and succeed within - a traditional university program.

SEEK's financial aid role is not as broad - SEEK provides access to an extra 2 semesters of TAP funds (10, instead of the usual 8), a fees grant (which covers each semester's university fees, but not tuition), and a books and supplies grant of as much as $350 per semester. SEEK is available only to students at one of the CUNY campuses. Application to the SEEK program is made as part of the regular admissions forms - you'll find additional questions that apply to applicants who want to be considered for the SEEK program..

I hope that helped. Good luck to you!
