Who would they get to be a prostitute if they're short on women?  I always thought prostitution was a product of poverty and stemmed from the necessity to make do with what you have.  Shoot, I figure the male suicide and crime rate would go up in relation to a shortage of women rather than prostitution.

Yes. I live in NYC, and men are too impatient to get to know  a woman, and choose to pay call girls instead for s*x & companionship. That pimp who was the boss of Ashley (The girl who was ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer's call girl), claims that over 70% of men in NYC use escort agencies. There is a huge amount of single women in NYC because they won't settle for a stupid "friends with benefits relationship." I have heard too many stories from various people I know, and wouldn't trust a guy as far as I could throw him in this city!

That's what researchers predict...you're talking about the s*x ratio, the ratio of men to women.  If there's a high s*x ratio (fewer women), prostitution does tend to increase.  Supply and demand!  This article discusses the issue of s*x ratio in China, which matches the situation you're describing.

Yes, prostitution definitely increases when there are much fewer women than men. Prostitution is very popular in China right now because there are 20 to 30 percent more men than women there. Historically, shortages of women also cause the men of some countries to loot and pillage other countries to be able to have access to their women. Right now, many Chinese men are importing mail order brides from Vietnam due to the shortage of Chinese women.

Warning this applies to the average person.  Each individual would be different.  Most woman would never become prostitutes and most men would never cheat.  They are both low percentages of the population.

Facts seem to indicate Prostitution increases when there is a shortage of men.  Men have a high s*x drive at all times if there is a shortage of woman it would be in there best interest to keep there spouse loosing her and they may not be able to find another so they would be inclined not to cheat.  When there are a lot of woman, men would not have to worry about keeping there current partner they could risk losing her and still be able to find another.  Woman with a shortage of men would be more inclined to use the Men's high s*x drive against them and try to get them to help support there family.

In a free market economy....yes. But depends on society too. It was not possible in Talibanistic Afghanistan. But there is a lot of prostitution there now.
