Does ps3 only upscale dvds if you have a hdmi cable?

I have the component setup but i get a message saying it will only upscale dvds through an hdmi connection, so do I need a HDMI cable to use the upscaling feature? Also how does surround sound work with HDMI cable and ps3

That is correct, that is because upscaling involves utilizing the digital output, and component is analog, not digital.  So yes you need a HDMI cable, and dont waste your money on a special one, they all do the same thing, transmit data.  Your surround sound works with HDMI, if you have a receiver that has HDMI in, you would connect the HDMI from the PS3 to the HDMI input on the receiver and then the HDMI out on the receiver would go to your tv.

  3. The specs say for the PS3 that it upscales on via HDMI... if thats what Sony is saying then i must believe that it's correct.

    HDMI also outputs digital sound.... depending on your setup is to the quality.

    I output Video & Audio via HDMI to my stereo system... then output from that 2 my TV. I have 7.1 surround sound.... sounds nutz.
