Does pulse drving really increse fuel efficiency?

The theory goes the longer you coast the more fuel efficient you become.

So I offer a question, if you pulse drive, that is accelerate to the speedlimit the coast til you are 5 under, then pulse back up to the speed limit, then slowly decelrate while coasting, does this really increase fuel efficieny?

Granted you will need tires inflated enough (preferrably with nitrogen) but normal air works.

But does this actually work? I am told you can easily add 4-5mpg by doing this. Another 1-2mpg if you use nitrogen in the tires for a total of upto 7mpg more. Or about 15%-20% more fuel efficiency.

  1. i hate idiots that do stuiped thing like that.

WHY because they force everyone else to try to match there speeds and also use more gas.

also more and more cars today have a event recorder in them.

if you want to try pulse driving just be warned that if you are involved in a accident you may find yourself involved in a lawsuit.

and this will cost you a lot more then the gas you save.

  2. No.  This was proven false by the TV show "Braniac" on a test track.  Constant slow speed was the most efficient.

  3. No. you use more so keep at a even speed

  4. No, but is sure annoys the h**l out of any passengers you have in the car.  It's one way to stop people wanting to car pool with you.

  5. No, this does not work.  You use more fuel accelerating than you save by coasting.  It has shown that cruise control for constant speed on a flat road surface is the best way to save gasoline.  Roads that travel through mountainous areas are a little more difficult to calculate, and if I remember correctly it was more or less a wash between using cruise control and not using it.

The nitrogen really works, but the pulse driving does not.

  6. Actually, that would seem to waste money.

If I am not mistaken, the relationship between speed and gas consumption is not linear, it is more along the lines of exponential.  In other words, to get from 20 pmh to 40 mph, you'll use more than double  the amount of gas, even though you are only doubling the speed.

Therefore, I think the gas you use to get your car back up to the speed limit is more than what you'll use in just maintaining your speed.  Not to mention you won't p**s off the guy in back of you or your passengers.

  7. No. You use more fuel accellerating... oh. never mind. See above.

  8. I just found a website that is so incredible it actually shows you how to convert your car to be able to run on gasoline and water. This thing can actually double your cars millage and your car's life. You have to check this out it sounds like this is just what your talking about.

  9. The only thing you CAN do like this is coast when going down a hill that is steep enough to maintain or increase your speed.  The engine idles while you roll merrily along.

"Pulse driving" is what most of us normally do when we aren't using cruise control - you are constantly speeding up/slowing down.  Try it if you have a mpg indicator on your car - drive 20 miles on a highway using only the gas pedal, and then do it again using cruise control (attempting to maintain the same speed, and hopefully with similar traffic/weather conditions).  The cruise control trip - which minimizes pulse driving - will be more efficient.

Inflating your tires with nitrogen is the biggest load of c**p I have ever heard of.  The ONLY reason this is ever really done is to prevent minute changes in pressure due to water vapor in the tires of race cars, where tiny differences in pressure as the tire heats and cools can affect the handling - in your day-to-day driving it does virtually nothing.
