Does putting tin foil on your windows really make it cooler in your house?

My mother in law told me to put tin foil over the windows in my living room and it would make it cooler but its still really hot i dont know if its really helping any I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.

  2. While it does help - it's not exactly attractive.  

    Discount stores like Walmart sell very inexpensive blackout drapery panels which easily hook to drapes already hanging on the window.  They worked very well to keep the room cooler in Nevada.

  3. Foil will make it way cooler. In fact, in South East Asia where it is very very hot all the time people use foil on windows all the time. It blocks and reflects the sun. Perfect Solution for hot rooms.

  4. If the sun doesn't shine on the windows directly, foil will not help...but DO cover  the windows in which the sun shines...

    I used to use foil in my college dorm room windows, for two reasons:  I was on the first floor and guys used to try and peek in...and because of the hot desert sun beating down on the building all the time. (New Mexico)
