  1. Puzzles help promote fine motor, visual motor and perceptual motor skills. Such are the foundation for reading and math. Start where a child has success then build on his skill level. Eventually, some students can even try three dimensional puzzles. Block designs are also a wonderful tool to try. DLM used to offer wonderful supplies.

  2. Any puzzles help. Puzzles do a lot of things including teach logical thinking, creative thinking, hand eye cordnation, matching etc.

Tailor it to the child, if one child needs to learn letters make a puzzle so that each letter is a puzzle piece...etc.

  3. Check out www.abilitations.com for tons of activities and toys to use with children of all abilities.  Puzzles for children with special needs can vary, depending on fine motor and cognitive abilities.... some children have difficulty with puzzles with pegs, if they have fine motor problems.  Others may not understand the relationship between the negative space in the puzzle board and the corresponding puzzle piece.  Puzzles help with dexterity, spacial concepts, understanding of negative space, eye-hand coordination and lots of other concepts.
