  1. To unlock a phone, contact the service provider directly. They will be glad to provide you with a code, as long as you provide why (International travel is liable). Quad-band just means that the phone can work on 4 frequencies. United States and some other countries use 850/1900 mhz, while Europe, Asia (and some other countries) use 900/1800 mhz.

Tri-band may only work partially outside the country. "Unlocked" only means that you are able to put in another service provider's sim card into your phone. Unless you don't unlock your phone, and use another service provider's card in your phone, it will not operate.

  2. Quadband does not mean unlocked

Quadband means the phone can be used anywhere in the world that supports GSM tecnology.

Unlocked means the phone can be used with any carrier's GSM sim card.

The second part of your question is a bit tricky as I am not sure what you are asking. If you are asking if you can use a SK LX on your travels outside the US, the answer is yes, you just have to have T-Mobile add international roaming to your account. For this, the SK does not have to be unlocked. If you plan to use a different carriers sim on your travels, then the SK would need to be unlocked.

If you want to use the iphone with the T-Mobile sim or any other carrier sim (besides att) then you will have to unlock the phone

  3. Quad-band means that the phone works on all GSM frequencies, whereas tri-band or dual band phones only work on a subset of frequencies.

It has nothing to do with whether the phone is locked or not. A locked phone will only work with a SIM card from the provider it is locked to, whereas an unlocked phone will work with a SIM card from any provider.

Phones can usually be unlocked using a data cable and special software, but it depends on the brand and model of phone. They can also be unlocked by entering a code from your provider, but the provider may charge for this.
