Question:

Does "the big three" really work?

Okay, I recently posted a question about adding another battery to my car for my new system and some users said to just upgrade to "the big 3."

Well does it really work? I want to know. I am going to be running 2 12" Solobaric L7's at 4 Ohms and my amp is a Kicker ZX2500.1 at 4 Ohms.

My plan is to get a Yellow Top Optima and a New Alternator with at least 200 Amps, and do the big 3. But does it really work? I need other users opinions. Thank you.

  1. yes it works...people that know a lot and have experimented a lot with different powered systems have done this and it has improved them everytime...a lot of times if u just do the big 3 and upgrade the alternator that would work..i would wait to get the battery and try the first two first

  2. Ask yourself this.  When auto makers are designing cars, do you think they are going to use high quality wire in every car they make to support high powered car audio systems?  Of course not.  They'll use the lowest quality wire they can get away with to adequately and safely power the car and that is it.

Thus, your alternator positive to battery positive, battery negative to chassis and engine ground to chassis wires are usually some mid grade wire.  More then likely, you couldn't use any of them to wire your ZX2500.1 amp.  (Especially since 1/0 gauge is recommended.)

So definitely do it ... and you're on the right track with planning on a Yellow Top Optima and H/O alternator.

  3. yep, sure does....the bigger the river, the more flow....

  4. Yes it works my brother recently did the big three it's a little work but it was well worth it. He has a jl audio setup one 500/1v2 and a 12inch w6 sub and his lights were dimming so he changed the battery with a yellow optima battery did the big 3 with all 0 zero and couple 4 guage wire n boom loud bass and the lights did not even flinch at all. I might reccomend if you have the money to go with the new soundstream cap cell battery not only a great look but also has enough life power to,  here a link to view them.

  5. absolutly... see many vehicals do not have great wiring for the big three, and remember the power wire in thekit you buy, is only have the circuit. the ground and the positive, they have to connect, and get power from the alternator, and those wires are the big three. so a 0 ga wire kit will not act as it should if the current "not so big" three are only 4 ga.. you especially need the big 3 if you get a new HO alternator.

Simply answer is yes it works...

    UPDATE:

I do feel it neccesary to point out something you may or may not realize. that's a beast of a amp, but is it really that much louder, truth is not really, see doubling power does not double volume, not even close. in fact doubling power only increases volume by 3db, assuming all other factors are equal. to make a system "twice as loud" requires a 10db gain. and the smallest amount the human ear can detect is 1 db. now with all that said, a sub enclosure can make a 6db difference...think about that... a enclosure can make as much a difference as quadrupling power. here's the thing, a simple big three upgrade with no other changes would likely get you to a full 1000 watts RMS. going to 2500 will get you about 4-4.5 db gain. and considering teh cost of a alternator and battery, personally i do not think it is worth it. 1000 watts with a proper enclosure will "hurt" when you turn it up. unless you plan to compete i personally feel it is a waiste. i have 800 watts total system power and with the top off my jeep i can hear and feel everything fine at 65 mph... and my system is built for quality sound and stealth looks, i was not even trying for volume.
