  1. Plastic leaches dangerous chemicals into the water. Use aluminum or stainless steel water bottles. I have a Klean Kanteen and a Sigg. Klean Kanteen is cheaper. I added an article called "Purging Plastic".

  2. actually its healthier for you and the planet..make sure though that you rince it out before each use...but no it does not realease chemicles..hope that helps

  3. It's totally safe as long as you clean out the bottle now and then and keep it in the fridge. The people spreading the rumours of chemical leaching and bacteria are likely from the International Bottled Water Association, who are basically lobbyists for the bottled water companies. Think "Thank You For Smoking" but in water terms :D

Personally, I refill big 1.5 L bottles now and then since they're so convenient to have in the fridge. I just rinse them out with room temp water and a little soap and it's fine.

See my sources for some more info.

  4. yes, becausewhen you refill the water, the air got push by the chemical and creat evaporation

  5. Oh I wrote a paper on this once in college, for my polymers class.  The chemical is called bisphenol-A, it is found mainly in Nalgene water bottles and the white lining in tin cans, and the negative effects are debatable.

    From http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/114/bpa :

"Ninety-five percent of Americans were found to have the chemical in their urine in a 2004 biomonitoring study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)."

Since it's probably not in the disposable kind of water bottle, and you've already been exposed to it, I wouldn't worry about it.

  6. No, and this is, in fact, the most environmentally responsible use for those bottles.

    Check this article:

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/envi...

Look at the cost TO YOU of the water to refill it ($0.00002) compared to what you paid for it filled with water as given in the article.  See how many millions of barrels of petroleum and billions of dollars are being wasted by the use of bottled water.

  7. It releases chemicals and it carrys alot of germs.  Its not good to reuse plastic water bottlesover and over again. The only way it would be safe is to boil them in boiling water.  Why bother doing that just send them so that they can be recycled.

  8. Most plastics are not as stable as, say, glass.  Everything leaches into everything, according to an old professor of mine, and the law of increasing entropy (randomness) in general.  Plastic just leaches more.

Now, I'm not sure what's in water bottles that could harm you, but I know of three types of chemicals used in plastics that can cause harm to humans.  To fight the decomposition process, manufactures often add heavy metals like lead and cadmium to plastics like pvc.  Heavy metals can cause brain damage.

They also add pthalates to make plastics more pliable and stretchy like cling wrap.  Pthalates cause reproductive problems in boys, last I heard.

There are also polybrominated biphenyls which are in many, many plastics and have recently become a concern, from what I understand from a recent NPR broadcast.  They cause early onset of puberty in girls.
