well my car has the registration from the state of Ohio but my insurance expired so now im in New York and im wondering if i can just get my car insured here in New York without changing the registration. My car was towed and i need to get it out from the lot therefore i need to have everything in order. Does it matter if my registration is from one state and my insurance from another?

  1. No insurance policy I've ever been covered under has insured me without proof of registration in the same state.

And at least in Montana and California, you are required by law to register your automobile soon after establishing residency there.

  2. Normally, the insurance and registration need to be from the same State. I am surprised you are living in NY without being required to switch registration to there. Most states give you 30 days to switch. Unless you are in college or the military.
