Does regular yogurt (like Yoplait) have the same digestive benefits as Activa (Dannon) yogurts or Yakult?

Is the hype worth the money on Dannon's Activa yogurts or Yakults probiotic drink? Or will regular plain Yoplait yogurt do the same?

Does regular yoplait yogurt have these 'good' digestive bacterias like Yakult or Activa?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Different yogurts have different strains of probiotics or good bacteria.  You can look up what the different strains do.  One strain, Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, is used in most yogurt and it creates lactase in the intestines to help you digest milk sugars.  Other strains produce other digestive enzymes and some fight certain bacteria.  There are studies on NIH's website, Pubmed, that show what different probiotics do.  You can also skip yogurt altogether and just take probiotic supplements or eat fermented foods.

  2. No supposedly it doesn't, but I recon it is a bit overestimated. I used to have an awful digestive system, and I mean BAD, and I eat a muller yoghurt per day. This seems to have really sorted out my digestive system - don't ask me why - but I recon that normal yoghurts can have beneficial effects on digestion just as much as the "special" ones! However, my advice is of you're going to buy probiotic yoghurt, go for Activia - they taste really good and aren't grainy like the drinks :-]

  3. Doesn't have the same bacteria,

  4. it doesn't have the same digestive bacteria. all dannon and yoplait yogurt are sweetened with corn syrup. even the low fat varieties. i have allergies to corn.
