Question:

Does rhyming matter?

I'm due to give birth to number 2 this week, still don't have a girl's name sorted.

Maya and Mya are my 2 girl's names at the moment.

Baby number 1 is Leila.

Do u think that Maya rhymes too much with Leila?

Also, my choice for a boy's name is Josiah. If i have a girl this time and I name it Mya, do u think that Mya and Josiah rhyme too much?

Thanks for your help!

  1. How are you pronouncing the names?  I pronounce Maya as MYE-uh.  Are you saying MAY-uh?  Is Mya pronounced like MYE-uh or MEE-uh?

Leila and Maya don't rhyme.  They have the same ending sound, but I think that makes them sound cute together.  Technical explanation:  Names rhyme when the stressed syllables have the same vowel sounds and same sounds after the vowel sound.  LAY-luh and MYE-uh don't rhyme because the stressed syllables are different.  LAY-luh and MAY-uh don't quite rhyme either, since Leila has an extra L.  SAIR-uh and CLAIR-uh (Sarah and Clara) do rhyme, though, since everything after the stressed vowel sound is the same.

Josiah, however, does rhyme with Maya/Mya (assuming you're pronouncing it like MYE-uh).  I don't think it's horrible, though, since Josiah and Mya have a different number of syllables.

Sometimes rhyming names can sound a bit contrived, especially for twins.  Since you're not *trying* to come up with rhyming names, but instead just choosing names you like that happen to have similar sounds, I think you're okay.  Maya and Leila sound really cute together.  Mya and Josiah are different enough that it's not obnoxious.  I would find combinations like Sarah and Clara or Macy and Lacey a bit annoying, especially if they were done on purpose.

If the near-rhymes are really bothering you, you might also consider Mia (MEE-uh), Mira, or Mara, as they're even less similar to Leila and Josiah.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

  2. I think that Leila, Maya and Josiah all work together nicely. I don't think that they are too rhymey or too close in sound. I love the name Leila by the way...

  3. no rhyming does not matter, people often have a hard time when their kids names rhyme, because of the tendency for a lot of parents to mess up and call one kid their siblings name all the time.  it might make things more difficult for u.

  4. Well, my sisters are Kelly and Shelly, and they seemed to turn out just fine (just don't tell them that I said so!)

They are both (somewhat, well, sometimes... mostly) mature adults with individual lives and interests. They are also very close, and care a great deal for each other.

Do I think that having rhyming names hurt them - no!

Do I think that having rhyming names helped them in any way - no

I don't think that I would strive to rhyme the names, but if those are the names you like, than use them.

BTW - my name is Suzanna and doesn't rhyme with my sisters names - I'm the one that gets teased! I'm always told that mom should have named me "Smelly" so that I would fit in hehe

    Best of luck :-)

  5. Lol yeah i guess it does sort of clash. Cute girl name. But for the boy i suggest you change it to "Joseph" or something simillar if you like it! =]
