I heard that running breaks down muscle, so if I use a muscle building supplement will the muscle grow back larger

I was thinking about using the "Up Your Mass" muscle building supplement.

  1. running works a lot of muscle in your upper body, mostly your core(obliques abs lower back)

  2. all your muscles in the upper body are used during running but they dont make them bigger

  3. I like the physiology answer on the muscles of the upper body. . .Let me clarify your question though.

There are 2 types of running -  sprinting and long distance.  With the Olympics coming up, you can see that the 100m are not what you call skinny.  They are very muscular which they need for power.

Long distance runners are the skinny ones.  They don't need the large muscle mass to generate the power needed for speed.

Fun Fact:  compare the bodies of body builders with olympic lifters.  Both are large and muscular.  At the muscle fiber level, body builder's fibers are almost identical to that of long distance runners (mostly Type I - slow twitch).  An Olympic power lifter is closer to a sprinter (mostly Type II - fast twitch).  Body Builders typically train with high repetitions (and high weights), the body adjusts by converting their Type II fibers into Type I so that the muscles can get more oxygen because of the number of reps.   Type II needs to be more efficient in the anaerobic phase of the sports.  Powerlifters are doing single reps of their max at events.  No need for Type I.

    Good Luck!

  4. When you breathe out there are muscles that help your diaphragm

    -transverse abdominis

    -rectus abdominis (6-pack)

    -external oblique (sides)

    -internal oblique

There are the set of muscles that help your chest cavity area expand, so that air can come in to it

-internal intercostals - the ones inside the ribs

-external intercostals- the ones outside the ribs

You also use your upper body & arm muscles alot, especially when running uphill (try running on the spot with your arms by your side...)

    Here are the main ones:

    -biceps

    -triceps

    -deltoid

    -trapezius

    -rotator cuff

    -pectorals

So, yes running does work many musles in your upper body!

Running will primarily breakdown fat & carbohydrate for energy but muscle tissue will be broken down too.

Your muscles need protein to survive because it gives them essential fuel to recover & re-build after exercise. Whey protein is considered to be the best type of protein.

Muscle building products won't make you look like a body builder unless you accompany them with vigorous weight training. They will help keep your body toned & healthy.

Try maximuscle Promax Shake. It contains whey protein & is very low in lactose & fat
