Does salinity play a role if I want to raise fancy guppies and neon tetras together?

I heard that neon tetras and fancy guppies are compatible. Guppies require salinity, though. Will the salinity affect my neon tetras?

  1. They both will do well with a salt amount of 1 tablespoon  per 5 gallons of water and a pH of 7.0. You will be able to raise lots of guppies and the neons will for the most part ignore any babies in the tank . However neons will not breed under these conditions . If you want to breed them they will need their own tank set up and you will need lots of experience in breeding egg laying fish . You can find lots of information on the net by just searching "breeding neon tetras . Good luck !

Ps : make sure you use aquarium salt !

  2. salinity is the measure of marine salt in water, guppies do not live in saltwater neither do tetras.  You heard right, they live well together.

  3. Guppies do not need it. I breed guppies and have been for some now.

Your fish are fine without marine salt.

Nice choice! Never had neons with guppies before!

    Good Luck!

  4. Guppies are a brackish water fish.  They can live in fresh water but will do better with a little salt in the water.

Neons do best in slightly acid soft water.  They come from the Amazon Basin.  There is almost no salt in their water.

They may live together but neither will be happy and in best shape possible.

  5. Stick to fresh water, no salt.

Guppies can live without salt, neons dont like it. Guppies are fine with some salt in their water, but it's not essential. Yes, it's a compromise, but it works.
