Does sea ice contain salt?

When salt water freezes, does the salt freeze in the ice? Or is it left behind to have a fresh water ice?

  1. Tiffan is right, but of course it is 3,5% and not 35% salt. (Sorry...)

    The ice crystals which forms when salt water freezes is without salt, and the salt level increases in the water and makes it heavier and sinks. This is what drives the Gulf stream. You may still get ice that tastes salty. Salt water that gets trapped between ice crystals, becomes more and more concentrated and finally solidifies.


  2. Yes it does contain salt.

    On average, seawater contains 35% salt, so it freezes at a slightly lower temperature (-2°C or 28°F) than pure water does. When sea ice forms, the frozen water floats above the denser ocean water, and the salt falls out of solution into the sea below. As the water begins to freeze, chunks of frazil ice form and collide with one another.
