Question:

Does sea salt contain spores of microorganisms that can be reactivated in a fresh water solution?

The sea is a soup of animal and plant life, although highly diluted in total. When sea brine is evaporated, what happens to the microorganisms and plants of that sea soup? Do spores form that could possibly be reactivated by dissolving the sea salt in fresh water?

  1. the person who already answered this was very correct,

but ti think ur talkin about halobacteria that live in salt brines.if sucha spore does arise, thentheres every chance of there growth. infact if u keep salt for a long time, u will find that it turns pinkish .this is due to growth of this halobacteria which are  very primitive bacteria-archaea, and they develop this pigment for photosynthesizing

  2. Yes, there's a chance that any sea water that would be collected from the ocean would contain microorganisms, but what would happen to them would depend on each type of organisms and what survival mechanisms it has to contend with drying and different salt concentrations.

To be able to survive, the organisms would have to be able to survive increasing salinity (as the water evaporates, the salt concentration becomes stronger) and the dried salt would be a very harsh environment for any organism.  Some bacteria would be able to survive by encysting (creating a hard shell around themselves) and there are some organisms like brine shrimp (sea monkeys) or can survive drying in the stage.  But to "reactivate", water would have to be added so the salt concentration would again be near that of natural seawater - too much or too little and they might not be able to survive.

If you're asking about the sea salt that's found in grocery stores, there'd be little chance of anything being reconstituted.  I'd imagine that besides gathering the sea water, the evaporation would take place at high temperatures so nothing would live through the process.
