Does seaweed change color when detached from its "roots"?

You know how when you take a leaf from a tree the leaf will eventually turn brown? Does seaweed to the same thing if you take some of it out of the ground? I don't mean taking it out of the water, just from the ground. I need to know for a story I'm writing.

  1. They don't have roots and do not get any nutrients from what they are attached to.  Many types of sea weed float in  the water.  Each cell is pretty much on their own as far as getting nutrients from the water surrounding them.
