Does sedimentation makes river shallow?

Could you please tell me whether sedimentation makes river shallow or not and how does it change if yes

Since sediment gets caught and piles up on the riverbed, especially near deltas, the river does become more shallow. Over a long period of time, sediment- along with other factors- can change the course of the river.
