my mom found a lump in her breast in april. her family has no history of breast cancer, and she has had a cyst in her breast before.im not sure if any of this would affect the risk of her having it, but i am her only child and she has smoked for quite a while. she hasnt had any of the symptoms except for the lump and itching, shes not any weaker or anything..and she is getting a mammogram to see if she has it sep. 4th. do you think it is? and if it is, would it be too late for her?

thank you soo muchh.

  1. Every woman has lumps. The thing is to do regular self-examinations to see if there are any changes. It would still be necessary to get regular mammograms for the same reason.

Well, being a smoker puts her at greater risk for getting cancer in general.

As far as questions to her prognosis- you really should get these answers (if you can) from your mother's doctor.

  2. Anne Marie

No she most likely does not have breast cancer. She has had cyst in the past. But, it is a good thing for her to have a mammogram. And the symptoms of weakness would not show up in a early stage of cancer

Good luck to you and your Mom

  3. the only way you would be able to know for sure is a doctor, without xrays and mammograms all you will get for answers is guesses. and guesses arent real answers.

  4. No that doesnt necessarily mean she has and if she does happen to have it its not too late...

  5. Only the tests she will have at her appointment can establish whether she has breast cancer or not.

    Most breast lumps aren't cancerous.

Smoking, while really bad for you and a risk for many cancers, is not listed among the recognised risks for breast cancer. Having no family history is irrelevant, as most cases of breast cancer (at least 90%) are not hereditary in any way.

Hopefully her tests on the 4th will be clear. If she has breast cancer, much will depend on her individual cancer - how advanced it is, how aggressive. Nobody here can tell you 'she will be ok', there are no guarantees.

But if it has been caught early, the chances are very good; and even if it hasn't it's unlikely to be 'too late'.

I was diagnosed with  advanced aggressive breast cancer which had spread to 13 lymph nodes. I had surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and almost 5 years later I'm fit and well with no evidence of cancer at my last routine check-up.

My best wishes for the 4th, Remember that if she does have cancer, everything her doctors recommend will be aimed at getting rid of that cancer

  6. dont worry everything will be alright if you guys notced it early theyll just have to remove it dont worry

  7. a high percentage of breast lumps (not sure of the actual amount) turn out not be be cancer... Even if the mammogram shows a lump, her next step would most likely be a biopsy, and a high percentage of biopsies come back not cancercous.  I know how worried you must be.  I just had a biopsy in May and it was quite a stressful time... Mine turned out benign (not cancer)...Please try not to think the worst..It is important not to dwell on it (for your sake and your moms).  Try to keep yourself and your mom busy and try no to give her any added stress during this time.   Good Luck to you mom. Please, if you can let us know how she makes out....

  8. well, i am an advocate  for breast cancer, and i want you to let your mom know how great it is that she is giving hereself routine breast exams.  But this could be cancer, the size of the lump will show how serious it is, if it is larger than a nickle she needs to let the doctor know so he can move up her appointment.

and remember... the best protection is early detection

  9. My situation was a lot like your mom's. I smoked for about 25 years, then quit. I quit 11 years ago.

I noticed a lump last May and thought it was a cyst because I had always had cystic b*****s. I waited until November to see a doctor and get a mammogram. Turned out to be cancer.

However, that's not to say it's what will happen to your mom. Most cyst-like structures, most "lumps" are NOT cancer.

Try not to worry too much. Even waiting as long as I did, and diagnosed with and "aggressive" cancer, it responded fabulously to chemotherapy and I am doing very well now. I finish up my radiation treatment this week, then continue with infusions every 3 weeks for about 6 more months.

There are many weapons to fight breast cancer.

  10. their posiblity dosent always mean could just be some tissue
