My husband and I have recently begun "hypermiling" to save gas. When we go down hill we like to put the car into neutral to save gas and gain as much speed as possible. Is this hard on the transmission of an automatic vehicle? (Please include your credentials in your answer.)

  1. yes it is hard on an auto tranny...it will probably wear down faster than usual...no savings there

  2. No it's ok to do this as transmissions have gears that synchronize the meshing of the gear teeth when putting the transmission back into gear.

  3. Usually its very bad to put ur car on N and go down to D while pressing on gas will (with time) cuz problems to ur transmission. Yet when u r in trafic or on stop red sign, its ok to put it on N ... It makes the motor rest and doesnt cuz lots of pressure on the breaks (if u have it on D) .

Usually Automatic cars slightly consume gaz more than manual stick cars ... but nothing to be considered !
