Does shooting blanks in a black powder rifle make a sound?

Acording to an article on how gun silencers work on howstuffworks.com the sound of gunfire is created by the uncorking effect of the bullet as it leaves the barrel. If you were to fire a black powder rifle without ammunition, would it make a gunshot sound?
