Does shut go up or not????

lol i know it sounds stupid. but my friend says shut dont go up when i say shut up.

so does it go up? lol

  1. No, there is no direction implied.  It's just a convention that has evolved with some verbs.  Like pay up, pack up, even up, show up, cook up, close up, free up, call up, give up, etc. How it originated, I don't know.  I doubt that anyone does.

    (I didn't realize how many of those there were until I started writing them.  There are probably dozens more.)


  2. shut up is just and abridged version of shut your mouth up. so the shutting of the mouth starts with the moving of your lower lip up until it makes contact with the upper lip. you can only move your lower jaw when talking, and it must go up to shut the mouth.
