Does silver really change color in the presence of poison?

I ask this because I'm interested in some Chinese history where nobles and royality would drink and eat with silverware to be aware if they're being poisoned. Is this true? If so how and why does it happen?

I'd like some sources too, if it isn't too much trouble.

  1. some poisons ( just as some chemicals) cause silver to look tarnished, really fast.

also, silver was considered to have some purifying proprieties.

so the story is some truth, some magic.

  2. yes, depending on the poison

  3. Sulfur will cause silver to tarnish immediately.   Now as far as Nobles eating with silver to detect poison..that I can not say one way or another.

  4. Yes, it is true. Emperors of China used "silver' chopsticks not to show wealth, but for their own protection as well. Emperors would have "food taste testers" however for extra security, the Emperors prefer to use his own silver chopsticks during every meal. Silver chopstick would turn black in the presence of poison, therefore the royal family uses silver chopsticks to prevent assassinations.

  5. Many salts of silver are black

Some good foods tarnish it badly......eg eggs
