  1. It may not affect rate of growth but it will affect the rate of  germination.   A large thick seed may require a longer time to sprout.

  2. not at all.

  3. I say no.  I've seen relatively large seeds like mango ready to sprout while still in a ripe fruit.  Other seeds, like the much smaller olive seed, have such hard shells that it can take years for enough water to soak through and stimulate the seed to sprout.  Canna lily seeds are even smaller and can also take years to sprout.  I hear coconuts have to be soaked in water a long time before they sprout.

Even for the adult plants, some grow fast, some grow slowly, and some grow in spurts.

I think a larger seed does supply more food to the embryo than a smaller seed, but the seedlings from small seeds are probably more capable of getting nutrients from the soil at a younger age so they don't need a larger seed.  I think other conditions like temperature, water supply and light would have more effect on seedling growth rate than seed size.

  4. nope. i've planted bachelor's button (medium sized seed) and alyssum-carpet of snow(EXTREMELY SMALL seed), and both started coming up after 2 days
