Question:

Does sleeping in contacts make your vision worse?

I accidently slept in my contacts last night and surprisingly my eyes feel fine. I wear monthly disposable contacts that aren't made to sleep in. I have heard that sleeping in contacts makes your vision worse is this true? If not what are the harmful effects of it. I don't plan on doing this but I was just wondering. Thanks for your help

  1. Hi

I have monthly contacts too, and have slept in them before. It doesn't ruin your eyesight however you can get an infection and it stops oxygen getting to the cornea. Over time it can irritate the eye and make it dry too.

  2. You can actually get blindness from sleeping in your contacts. Trust me.

  3. yes, you can temporarily affect your Rx (make it "worse") by sleeping in them.  low oxygen causes corneal EDEMA which will result in a myopic shift.

so...yes.  sleeping in them can make you "worse", at least temporarily (once the edema resolves you should go back to how you were...but chronic sleepers stay "worse" chronically)

  4. No, it can't make your vision worse but you can get an eye infection, have really badly dry eyes, or scratch your eye in your sleep.
