  1. no, S.S. wont help with assistive devices.  medicare will to an extent and under certain conditions.  You'll need an assessment from a physical therapist or physician to get things rolling.

  3. Social Security does not.  Medicare/Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) will pay for some of these things, provided a doctor orders them and shows that they are "medically necessary".  There is a whole list of things they will and won't pay for.

    There are also many cases where local governments have Community Development Block Grant programs that will assist in paying for home modifications for disabled/elderly people.  Check with your City/County's Community Development or whatever, Department.

  4. Call Bath Fitter. They do tub to shower conversions and they have a roll in shower. They will know if anyone has ever paid with help.
