Question:

Does society prolong adolescents?

In America anyways, it definitely seems like it does. I think the way our school system is plays a large role in this, but obvously parents do to.

  1. Yes very much so. Middle-aged people still act like teenagers now - nobody wants to be a child, and nobody wants to grow up either.

Adolescence is defined as beginning with the onset of the menses (menstruation) and ending with the leaving of home and financially taking care of oneself.  Adolescence has lengthened over the past 120 years.  Part of it is due to better nutrition, onset earlier...and ending is later....increased educational demands for employment, so independence is later.  So the length is longer, due to maturational changes, societal changes and an increased life span since 1900.

  3. Nope.  Tramps as young as 11 are having babies.  So, no, I don't agree with that at all.

  4. The short answer is yes.
