sony is not at all proprietary with there products, unlike several bose systems. sony will work with anything just about on the market.

unless you are working with a htib system then yes it will only work with other sony htib equipment

You should be able to use any brand you want. I have a Sony 5.1 digital a/v receiver and a Toshiba DVD player and television and everything works fine. My vintage Sears CD changer works with it just fine too. Most all connections are pretty universal so you should be ok. My Sony remote that came with my receiver works my Toshiba products as well.
