Both HBO and Starz tend to get movies at about the same time -- that is, 10-12 months after they were in theaters. Each has some preferential-treatment deals that the other does not (you're likely to see Warner Bros. movies like The Dark Knight or Harry Potter films on HBO first, and Disney/Pixar/Miramax films like Enchanted or WALL-E on Starz first), so in terms of new and recent movies, they're about the same. HBO does have its own original shows like Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Flight of the Conchords; Starz doesn't really have anything comparable to those. If you have digital cable with on-demand services, Starz tends to have a much bigger library of on-demand movies than HBO does at any given time, though most of them will be older films.

I used to like HBO better but lately Starz seems to have more of the recent movies while HBO had been relying heavily on their original series' for the past few years like Sopranos, Entourage, Deadwood, Carnivale, 6 Feet Under, The Wire, etc. They seem to be getting away from movies more and more evrey year.

HBO is probably better because they have more exclusivity deals with major studios (i.e. more studios contract with HBO to show their films).
