  1. Sugar or glucose in this case is the only source of energy for the brain.

When the brain does not receive the minimum amounts of glucose as in the case of a severe hypoglycemic episode (very low blood sugars) and I've been informed by my doctor that a glucose reading of about 10mg/dl a coma is likely to result possibly ending in death, however that number 10 I've stated could vary from person to person as diabetes is a very individualized disease and effects everyone differently.

  2. Yes, the brain requires some sugar form for energy and working properly. It also requires some fats for proper working.

Sugar comes in many forms. It is carbohydrates which are in all plant type foods. Any thing that grows in the ground is a plant type food.

There are low carb plants and high carb plants. We as diabetics would do well to avoid anything that isn't a very low carb gram count.
