  1. yes in concept of sustainability ,alternative energy features because it is more economic in the long run and tends to by pass government ,adding to independence

there are by now sohisticated philosiphies, that demonstrate life with limited technology and independance of governmental systems or civilization as we know it

    Such as Permaculture

the Permaculture designers manual by Bill Mollison, which cost about 40 dollars.

  2. Alternative energy such as solar, water and wind power are more sustainable than coal burning

  3. Sustainable development is develop an area in a way that can be continued forever and not harm the earth.

Alternative energy is a PART of sustainable development because using non-renewable resources like coal, oil, etc is not sustainable--someday those sources will run out.  Using sun, wind, and some other sources IS sustainable because the will not.

Sustainable development also includes how buildings are built to not harm environment and built to last, now food and landscaping is done so that it will last and not require continuing pesticide and fertilizer use.  It also involves thinking about water conservation and not draining local reservoirs dry.

  4. in pure dictionary terms, they mean different things. sustainable deveopment means, the process is totally recyclable naturally, instead of using exaustable resources (like making electricity from wood waste or energy crops). alternative energy is pretty much a term for any new technology that isn't common.

in today's world most of the "alternative" energy seems to be sustainable (solar, wind, OTEC etc. as opposed to conventional ones like coal and oil). but as i said, it is purely dictionary terms.  if we figure out how to mine for methane hydrade from ocean floors, it might be called an alternative energy but it won't be technically sustainable as there are limited availability (theoretically again).
