I am an Indian. I've got dark skin and I don't want it to get any darker. In fact, I consider fair skin beautiful, I am planning on going swimming today but I don't want a tan.

Does swimming give you a tan? Someone told me it's when you are exposed to the sun while swimming or soon after, that you get tanned.

Could someone tell me what exaclty happens while swimming that results in your gettin a tan?

What time of the day would be perfect if I don't want to develop a tan? Is after 5 pm ok?? What about early in the morning?6 am or so?

I'm in Hawaii...n I really don't want to miss out on anything...but this tanning thingy is preventing me from having fun.

What do I do? I'm really hesitant to swim nowadays.

Please adivise!!!

  1. ya swimming gets you tan so just wear long sleeves like light underarmour. its dangerous to go swimming when therer is no or little sun. also use a lot of sunscreen and

  2. The sun is harshest during the middle of the day. Say bewteen 10-3 or 4. After 5 should be fine. Wear lots of sunscreen and reaply it ever hour or so.

Being out in the sun gives you a tan. The water doesn't cover you with any kind of shadow, so the sun still hits your skin. Going out for a few hours shouldn't cause too much harm.

People who just sit there for the purpose of tanning can get super tan, but since you'll be moving around you should hardly notice a difference if anything happens.

  3. Wear super strong waterproof sunscreen, and make sure to put more on every couple of hours.

And don't worry, if you already have dark skin, it will take A LOT of sun to make a difference. I have light skin, and we went swimming every day for 6 weeks in P.E. and nothing happened to me without sunscreen... No tan or anything.

But then I went kayaking for 2 hours and got fried when I had some on.

  4. waterproof sunscreen like spf 50 sunscreen

  5. You can get a tan at any time of the day. Even if it is cloudy you can get a tan. The light reflecting off the water increases the risk.  If you dont' want to tan, you should use a sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or higher if they have it. And apply it often. Some sunscreens wash off with water so you would have to reapply after each swim.  I did see a commercial the other day for one that is waterproof, so you might try that one! When you are not in the water, wear a hat and cover up. Not only will you be preventing a tan, but you may also be preventing skin cancer!

    Good luck and have fun!!!
