  1. Yes, Switzerland has universal healthcare. It is mandatory, as mentioned previously, being organised by the government but is provided by private health care organisations so individuals have choice to shop around and get a good price for the area one lives in.

    PS I am also Swiss.

  5. not exactly; it's not like the UK or Canada.  all citizens are required by law to have insurance.  the government works with the insurance companies to negotiate rates yearly.  insurance companies are all required to offer at least a basic level of coverage that would be affordable by everyone (though i believe they also provide higher level premium plans for people who want it).  from what i hear, even the basic coverage is not terribly cheap... i've heard more than 1 Swiss person complain about the high insurance cost.
