Does tanning really speed up wrinkles? How do we know they weren't coming anyways? ?

From YOUR experience, can you say for certain that the sun caused your wrinkles?

  1. Just look around you. Compare two people of same age  -  one who who has been exposed to sun and/or has tanning and one that has not. That should be wrinkle evidence enough.

  2. Radiation breaks down collagen which acts as a support for the skin - kind of like a pillow.  When it breaks down the skin is slack and wrinkles.  We also get wrinkles from repeated smiling, frowning but for the same reason - collagen breakdown.  I can definitely say the sun has changed my skin.  If I look at the left side of my face (where my face is to the window of my car thus getting more exposure) and compare it to the right, the left side has more fine lines around my eye area.

  3. I dunno, maybe,I'm only 24 but I smile a lot so I have just barely there lines from that already but everyone says they don't notice it. I have tanned before quite a bit especially in high school.

  4. It really dries up the skin and causes wrinkles over time.  You can apply moisterizer to your skin but its not the same as your natural skin oil, which is why a lot of creams out there don't work.  If your going to tan do it in moderation and always use lotion in the bed, this prevents your skin from drying to the bone and peeling.  Good Luck!

  5. I don't think you can say for certain without constant vigilance and experimentation. Here is my experience I tanned tons in my teens and 20's. I always covered my face and I am 38 with no wrinkles and pretty good skin...on my face. My chest and shoulders however has sun damage and freckles. It has taken my 10 years to get my chest and shoulders to look healthier. My best friend(same age as me) tanned about the same if not more than me and also covered her face. She  has wrinkles on her face that is pretty normal, but her skin on the rest of her has pigmentation issues. Both our mom's have fantastic skin for 60 year old women.

So I feel if we wouldn't have tanned so much and been more vigilant about spf our skin would be so much better.

Tanning beds are 4 times stronger than laying in the sun(just a litte trivia).

So I do believe genetics play into it, stress level, diet, water consumption AND sun exposure. If I could do it over I would have never stepped in a tanning bed or fried myself by the pool. Hope that helped.
