    This rather facetious question highlights a rather pertinent point.

    Bell did not invent the telephone. He did, however, win the race to patent it! One Elisha Gray was beaten by hours in that race and he spent many years afterwards, pursuing Bell through the courts.

    A viable telephone was also in use in Russia, for several years, predating Bell's patent application.


  2. That's an interesting way of thinking about it. However, I dont think that's why telephones have (had) bells in them. Think about the technology at the time, bells were probably the best notification devices.

  3. no... BUT  "bell systems" "bell atlantic" and basically any of the old phone companies with the word BELL in it was because of mr.bell, and not because the phone rings...
