Does temperature inside & outside a car have any bearing on repairing a small nick in a windshield?

A repair person was picking at a nick in my windshield to fill it with a repair liquid. It was close to 100 degrees. While doing it the crack spidered along the windshield. I now have to have it replaced at my expense. Could it have been avoided in cooler temps?

  1. No, the only time it can crack like that if it goes from HOT to COLD or COLD to HOT very fast

  2. Yes.  Glass isn't a real solid, but a supercooled liquid.  The hotter the glass is, the greater tendency for it to flow and shatter especially when stressed.

  4. My boss had two windscreens fail on his Ford with outside temperatures below freezing and the heater on.

    Quite exciting apparently.

  5. Never work on a hot windshield.  My shop just got bit by that last week when trying to re-install a rear view mirror that had fallen off.  Even light hand pressure cracked the windshield from top to bottom because the windshield was facing into the sun.  It wasn't even that hot out.

Windshield repairs should be done in the shade at temps below 75-deg F
