I know that they use c-130 and c-17's to move people about, but do they own designed passenger aircraft or just use private contractors?

  1. Can and do use private contractors, as well as the C5.

    The USAF does possess passenger aircraft, C-20, C-21, C-22, C-32, C-37, C-40.

  2. The answer is "NO". While all the AC in the USAF can be configured to carry passengers (PAX) we have no passenger only ACs AF-1 not with standing.

Oscarsix: Its now the Air Mobility Command: all the old familer accronims like SAC, TAC and MAC are gone...

  3. The Military Airlift Command maintains a fleet of passenger aircraft from the two Boeing 747 aircraft that tales turns serving as Air Force One (Only whenever the President is actually aboard, other they are know by their tail numbers) to number of smaller aircraft used to support the travel activities of the various cabinet secretaries and directors of government agencies.

For large scale troop movements, the government will employ its existing fleet of tactical aircraft and augment that capability into secured rear areas using commerical airline chartered services.

  4. Yes.

The best ones are two 747s used as Air Force One.

They have a whole fleet of smaller planes for other uses.

They also can call up civilian airliners (Civilian Reserve Air Fleet) when they need to move a lot of people.  But in general they just charter civilian airliners as needed.
