Can I hook it up to a home cinema system and get surround sound with bku-ray movies?

And if so, are any systems in particular compatible/not with it?

  1. yes you can

  2. Yes, it plays at full 1080p HD just like all other blu-ray players if you are using a HDMI cable.

Yes it has digital optical out that can hook straight into most Home theaters or you can do pass through from the tv's digital rca, optical digital or even use the old analog rca audio connectors since the audio is transmitted to the tv through the HDMI cable.  I personally have a Sony 5.1 Home theater surround sound system that I have hooked up directly from my PS3's optical connection and through analog rca connectors for those being broadcast in an older format.

Some movies and such don't support the Dolby 5.1 so I have to switch the input to the analog in order to enjoy the audio in my theater system. It isn't as good as listening to it through the optical, but still dang close.

  3. oh yea

  4. Wowbango is right. PS3 is the only BD Live machine until Sony come out with their new models next month.

This isn't true. The standard audio format for both DVD and Blu-Ray is Dolby Digital (they are required to include a DD track) which can always be transfered through optical. What has likely happened is that you may have defaulted the PS3s audio output to DTS but have the receiver set to Dolby Digital instead of Auto. This would cut off your audio whenever a DTS movie is played. Check your settings. those movies should be playing. If worse comes to worse go into the menu for those movies and select the Dolby Digital track in the Movie Setup submenu.

  5. yeh

  6. Yes it does. The Ps3 is pretty much the best blu-ray player on the market. The 40GB ps3 does as good or BETTER than any other blu-ray player. It is currently also the only profile 2.0 BD-LIVE capable blu-ray player. It recently got an update, which now enables it to decode ALL new HD sound codecs (Linear PCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA(commonly reffered to as Master Audio)) I always recommend a ps3 to everyone before even concidering a standalone blu-ray player.
