Question:

Does the Airbus A-380 have reverse thrusters?

Originally I thought it was not going to have them to save some weight, but after watching YouTube videos and talking to some friends, I heard the FAA made them.

  1. Of course it does, all planes nowadays have reverse thrusters as a requirement

  2. Yes, the Airbus A-380 has referse thrust. In fact, all airplanes do, it is standard.

Just check out some websites containing aircraft specifications. Even wikipedia will do...

  3. yes

  4. Uh. Reverse thrust is not a requirement under FAR 25, cerificacion standards for transport category aircraft. In fact, if the manufacturerer decides to add reverse thrust, they cannot be used or considered during rejected takeoffs or landings. That is why you will never find landing data with thrust reverser inop. The airplane was was tested as though they were never there in the first place during certification flight testing. That is also why when you show up to the airplane and find one inop in the maintenance log, you simply lock it closed as required and off you go. You don't even need to recalculate takeoff and landing distance. The effects of thrust reverse was never even considered.

  5. Yes they do on and the thrust reversers are or the cold stream reverser type.

  6. Yes!

The A380 only has reverse thrusters on engine 2 and 3, as if engines 1 and 4 had them, the enormous wingspan would result in the "sucking-up" of dirt and grass, ruining the engines.

  7. Yes it does but only on the inboard engines(engines 2&3). Airbus originally wasn't gonna put any reverse thrusters because the A380 has powerful brakes and can brake with thrust reversers but the FAA mandated it and so Airbus put it on the two engines. It doesn't have on all the four engines cus the A380 has a wingspan of 79.8m and it may overhand runways and suck in debris causing damage to th engines. So only the two inboard engines which are still hanging withing the runway width have them.

  8. Only two of the four engines (the inboards) are fitted with thrust reversers.

You can see it in this picture:

Thrust reversers aren't a requirement.  There are quite a few jets that don't have them (like the Fokker F28).
