The phone itself can access the internet for free, however, this is only if you are connecting to your own wireless connection or a public connection that is free.

Many of the UK's hotspots are pay-to-use, such as BT OpenZone, but a initiative called BTFON allows free wireless internet if you subscribe; I suggest giving it a look.

As for when you are out of hotspot range, you must connect using your mobile operator, which can cost a lot if you don't have an included bundle, but bundles are available that give pretty useful light access =)

To conclude:

1. Your own wireless network is free

2 BT OpenZone is pay-to-use

3. BTFON is free if you subscribe

4. Mobile internet can be expensive out of bundle.
