I have heard/seen that every other branch of the military starts people off higher up, but I cannot figure out if the Coast Guard does as well. I already have a B.S. in a life science field, if that helps.

  1. Go officer. As enlisted in the USMC you will only get E-2 out of boot for just about anything. But, if you have a degree you are eligible for officer so, do it.

  2. E-3.

  3. The Army gives you E-4 rank, I don't see why the coast guard wouldn't, but definitely try to go officer.

  4. I would think so...but why not go officer?

  5. In general all services give you a higher start if you have a degree.  It also depends on the field you are going in.  The military is rewarding people for seeking self improvement/higher education but if you are looking for a big jump just because you have a degree in "Underwater Basketweaving" as opposed to "Military History" or "Business Management" it doesn't translate well.  Some services and jobs look for more educated people than others.  Not to dis the Marines or the infantry but they have lower requirements that say a Nuclear sub mechanic.

Have you talked to a recruiter?
