Does the DCH010512D really just take in a +5 and GND signal and output both a +/- 12V signal?

It does not require anything else special?

Also...i can then follow this up by regulating the two signals down to +/- 6V without a hitch?

  1. Yes, that is what it does. It's basically a small switching supply, or DC-DC converter.

    note that the output is unregulated. Yes, you can add 6 volt regulators.

    Get the data sheet and read it carefully. It does put out a lot of ripple, but the post regulators will take care of that. I'd put small electrolytic caps on the outputs. The 3 terminal regulators require that anyway.
