Does the Earth need its internal heat sources to survive or can it live on without them, only warmed at first by surface heat. just like described in the the journey to the center of the earth by jules verne?

  1. As far as temprature goes, the Earth is fine with a solid earth but look at the bennys of a liquid mezo.

Our Earth is a HUGE electromagnet.  The center is solid iron and the rotation causes the center core to be spinning relative to the surface.  The spinning causes magnetic fields.  In this variation our earth is bipolar.  Our magnetic field is known as the Van Allen belt. This belt shields us from cosmic rays and other charged particles.  The beauty of the charged particles can be viewed as the Northern and Southern lights.  Without this protection, we would be irradiated into extinction or mutated into monsters.

  2. Yes the heat is necessary

  3. Yes, or it would have cooled long ago.  The internal heat machine is necessary for the movements of the plates that move about on top of the crust.  Also for the magnetic poles and lines of force just to name a few examples.

  4. The Earth is not a  living thing, so I don't know what it means for  the Earth to "survive".  The planet Earth can go on its path through space quite fine without any internal heat.

If you mean, do the living things on the Earth need the Earth's internal heat, that is a different question.  They could live for several million years without internal heat.  But eventually, the surface chemistry would not support life.  We need the internal heat to support plate tectonics, so that surface chemicals are recycled back into the biosphere.   Otherwise, a lot of the elements needed for life get locked up in the rocks or at the bottom of the sea.
