  1. In general terms, for passenger use, NO

The period between close-down (around 1am) and start-up (about 5am) is needed for essential maintenance. On some of the surface lines, it is possible to set up diversion routes (for example, two-way working on the parallel track) to undertake maintenance work, but this luxury is not available in tunnel sections.

There are exceptions to my first sentence. For example, at New Year, the system operates throughout the night. And, for a significantly major event in London, there might be all-night operation, as was the case for the Corontion in June 1953.

  2. Do not think so, as they have the track cleaners in at night.

  3. There is nothing like Track Cleaners. The last train is roughly 0130 on most lines (this is an average) So the underground closes down for 4 hours, TCC is turned off so essential rail/station refurb can commence!

  4. No, there is a closed down period, exact closure time varies from line to line, but most reopen at 5am.
