Question:

Does the NRL have double standards?

To me breaching a contract is plain as black and white, and I am assuming Andrew Johns breached his contract, when he admitted to using drugs throughout his NRL career, after being caught overseas. Why is SBW situation any different? They want to crucify him in every way, yet I would rather walk out on a contract than take up drugs. If anything, for Johns efforts, he was made one of the Top 100 Centenary League Team, has a coaching job in the NRL and does commentary on Channel 9. It doesn't make any sense to me!

  1. Great question! Does nrl have the same "bringing the game into Disrepute" as the afl?

Often wondered about the Andrew Johns thing myself. He is still touted as some kind of hero even though he is a self confessed addict. My only answer was that he confessed after his playing days were over so nrl could do little. (On the other side of sport, Ben Cousins has been painted as the devil incarnate for having the same problem. Dumped by his club & Channel 7 & many footy fans). Guess it depends on the criteria for selection of the top 100 team. If it went only on playing ability then he hasd to get in.

Guess we wil have to wait and see how the SBW thing pans out before comparing the two situations.

  2. I'm sorry manly, but recreational or not it was illegal. That's not to say that they are right in what they did. They were both in the wrong but it suits the NRL to go after SBW rather than Johns. It should also be remembered that this breach of contract is not anm unusual occerrence in league. How many coaches get shafted prior to their contracts expiring. But the NRL and their media representatives tend to not mention this side of contracts. It was also the current NRL CEO who was working for super league in tryinf to get players to ditch their club contacts and sign (for more money) with super league.

So in answe to your question, yes the NRL does have double standards.

  3. Two completely different things.

SBW walked out on a contract, not telling anyone where or who he was going to, while A.Johns used a recreational drug.

    Not performance enhancing, recreational.

Yes, drugs are bad and illegal, but SBW walked out on a contract.

Andrew Johns is three times the player SBW ever will be, or, was.

  4. NEWCASTLE !!!

  5. yeah i forgot he did that!!

    GO MANLY!!!

  6. go the dogs

  7. no a.johns only got caught after his playing days but in saying that did the knights know and just turned a blind eye

but for SBW he has taken his ball and just gone telling no one and this for a person who was the highest player in the bulldogs but when you have a manager that whislt he is still playing nrl can not make any money from him what do you do you fill his head with rubbish and send him to france

  8. How stupid are you? Johns was retired at the time of his indiscretion. Is this an attempt to defend $BW? Pathetic!

  9. I have to agree about double standards..I just read on the net today where the doggies didnt like the way Taumana was behaving...soooo

Guess what...THEY TORE UP HIS CONTRACT...Duh

  10. SBW should have sat down with the club and worked out away instead of runnin away. at the end of the day yes the nrl have double standers clubs have been renigin on contracts for years but you dont hear about that in the papers. as for johns you would hold probley one of the most gifted players ever to play the game from coachin other players because he decided to be honest to the club and fans that made him. he could have lied and no one would know the differnce i actually respect him more now because of his honesty not to mention he could help other players that may walk the same path as what he did
