Does the PS3 80GB Europe version have backwards compatablility?

I've heard that it does, then i heard that it doesn't !! If not, then why buy an 80gb and not a 40gb?

New 80GB is the same 40GB (no PS2 games) with 80GB HDD. It'll be sold at current 40GB's price.
