I have component cables for my ps3 and when I go to the DVD settings and try to go to the DVD Upscaler menu it just says normal and if i go any higher it says this wont upscale the DVD, so im guessing you need HDMI cables to upscale regular DVDs?

  1. Miguel is right.

However, even if your PS3 will not upsale a SD DVD, your HDTV WILL.  One can argue/test as to whether the PS3 or your TV will do a better upscaling/deinterlacing, but practically, i doubt most people would be able to see the difference.

  2. Yes it does. All upscaling DVD or Blu-Ray players need HDMI to upscale standard DVDs above 480P due to the copy protection that HDMI has. So yes you need HDMI.
