The United States has a diploma known as the General Education Diploma for kids who want to graduate high school early or adults who never received their high school diploma. It's awarded after the taking of five tests covering high school curriculum and is accepted by colleges as the equivalent of a high school diploma. Does the Republic of Ireland have something to this effect? If so, what does it consist of?

  1. There is an alternative to the Leaving Cert but I can't think what it is called. They do more practical classes, hotel management etc. I'm sure the name can be found somewhere online. I doubt you would be able to just come over and take either though. best place for informarion would be the department of education website. Any search negine will find it for you.

  2. You could take the laeving cert. Ashfield collage in dublin would take you but its not free and not cheap. You need the leaving cert to attend collage in ireland

  3. do you mean the leaving certificate??

  4. good luck trying to take the leaving cert without preparation.

The sats in the states measure aptitude the leaving cert does not,

Its not one of the hardest and most respected end of school exam systems in the world for nothing.

Put it this way the leaving cert would require the same level of comprehension and applied learning that would be required of a first year college student.

I would not compare a high school diploma to a Leaving cert, they are on two very different levels.

An apptitude test does not measure this and in my opinion is just a glorified IQ test and IQ tests only measure your ability to do an IQ test.

However the leaving cert is not without fault it can be taken if prior knowledge and an ability to predict what will generally be asked is applied. However  if you leave yourself short and are not 100% prepared then you are screwed, it is a mentally demanding examination process

Also there is no continuious assesment system in the irish educational system, its basic that what you do on examination day is all that matters.
