Hello, recently I bought the Sony DSR-PD150 camcorder. I did a lot of research about it before I actaully bought it. Currently I am waiting for it to arrive (I bought it from ebay). My question is does the sony pd150 allow you to shoot in 24 Progressive Frames per second. I asked my friend who used to own the camera, he told me it should be able to. I also tried calling Sony support but like always there hold time was extremely long. I hope someone can give me an answer to this question. I am been trying to find an answer for a while. I greatly appreciate and help. Thank you!

  1. Here is a link for the manual for the camcorder:

I did a quick scan then a search and found nothing related to "24p",  "frame rate", or cinematic.

This review makes no mention of it.

This one says it mat do 30p...

So it does not mean this camcorder does not do 24p, but my guess is it is highly unlikely.

  2. No. The Sony DSR-PD150 does not shoot in 24p. I'm sorry for the bad news. It does have a "Progressive Scan" mode, but if it's anything like my VX2100, it's not true 30p...it's more like 15p I believe, and if it's anything like my VX2100, it's progressive mode is pretty much unuseable.

The thing is, ALL standard definition camcorders shoot natively in 480 fields INTERLACED, not progressive. In order to simulate 24p in standard def, Panasonic developed a complex algorithm to get around this and shot 24p and 30p in it's DVX100.

But don't get too down on  yourself. 24p isn't the only factor in getting that "film" look. There's the Depth of field aspect that 24p doesn't do. This effect can be created with the help of a nice 35mm adapter. Letus makes great ones, and Brevis and SGPro and Redrock Micro make nice ones.

Again, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But don't get too down on your PD150, it's an excellent camera nonetheless. Besides, 24p can be a pain to edit.
